MEDICAL-BEHAVIORAL & PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES    

One of the specialties of the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is our ability to integrate the medical, psychiatric and social components of care in a comprehensive approach. The physical well-being of a psychiatric patient is critical to emotional health and rehabilitation.

Medical-Behavioral Inpatient Unit
This unit serve the patient who is both medically and behaviorally compromised. The unit operate under a co-attending model where medicine and psychiatry work closely in developing appropriate treatment plans with a multi-disciplinary team approach. A full range of medical and surgical services is complemented by a structured behavioral milieu. This unique program gives us the ability to treat a multiply- diagnosed, and traditionally inadequately served group.

Psychiatric Services
Metro-Boston Inpatient Services The inpatient psychiatric service is comprised of 125 beds managed under the auspices of the Department of Mental Health (DMH) for individuals living with severe and persistent mental illnesses and determined to be eligible for DMH services. These services offer comprehensive diagnostic, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitative psychiatric services for those individuals referred through the acute care psychiatric system and from other institutions. The focus of all treatment efforts is on providing opportunities for individuals to 

leave the hospital setting and move to increasing levels of independence and self-sufficiency in maximizing their individual recovery. Additionally, DMH patients utilize the Ambulatory Care Center’s Goldfarb Primary Care and Behavioral Health Clinics with comprehensive medical services, counseling and psychopharmacology management. Massachusetts Mental Health Center
Housed temporarily on campus is the Massachusetts Mental Health Center (MMHC). MMHC is a large urban mental health center mandated by the Department of Mental Health to provide comprehensive mental health treatment and rehabilitation to all adults age 19 or older who live, work, or attend school within the MMHC Natural Service Area, and who meet the eligibility criteria as defined by DMH. Included within this Natural Service Area are the Boston neighborhoods of Brighton, Allston, Jamaica Plain, Brookline, Roslindale, parts of Roxbury and the Fenway, Hyde Park and West Roxbury.

Inpatient Addiction Services  
The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital provides support to individuals with substance abuse related issues who are hospitalized on medical and surgical inpatient units. Various services include substance abuse history and assessment, recommendations to clinical staff for withdrawal states, referral for opiate dependent treatment (methadone and suboxone), pain management strategies, and referral to addiction based treatment post-hospitalization.

Additionally, regularly scheduled AA and NA meetings are held within the hospital.
